Govt sends ‘one last notice’ to Twitter on new IT rules

The Centre on June 5 sent a strong final warning notice to Twitter to follow the new IT rules, failing which the social media platform “shall be liable for consequences” under the law.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in the notice said that Twitter has failed to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediary guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

Also, The Resident Grievance Officer and Nodal Contact Person appointed by Twitter is not an employee of the company, which is again against the rules.

The ministry said, Twitter is hereby warned by giving one last notice to immediately obey the Rules and if they fail, the exemption from liability available under section 79 of the IT Act, 2000 shall stand withdrawn and Twitter should be ready to be liable for consequences as per the IT Act and other penal laws of India.
