One crore Covid vaccines will be available every day by mid-July, or early August – said ICMR chief Dr. Balram Bhargava.
The Centre has made an aim of vaccinating the whole country – around 108 crore people – by the end of the year.
Tuesday afternoon ICMR chief Dr. Balram Bhargava said that we have to maintain patience as the existing manufacturers have promised to scale up capacity and the newer ones are coming forward to contribute towards production. So there can be no chance of falling short in the future.
He stated that increased testing and strict containment had helped control the second wave to a good extent. But this of not the permanent solution he added.
The center told the Kerala High Court last week that production is going to be increased by July. Currently, our country is producing around 8.5 crore doses per month. Sputnik V production is going to start soon. Covishield and Covaxin are already being produced in India.
On Saturday Delhi extended its lockdown by a week. But allowed manufacturing and construction activities to resume.
He told that Finding a way to ease lockdown has been a difficult decision.
He mentioned, “Re-opening revolves around three pillars:
- The positivity rate of less than five percent for a week.
- At least 70 percent of vulnerable individuals (elderly and those over 45 with co-morbidities) must be vaccinated.
- The community must continue to follow Covid-appropriate behavior.
